Introduction to the AAHAM Certification Programs
The American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) is a national association of healthcare professionals. Its members have committed to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and competence. They are dedicated to the exchange of knowledge as it relates to the changes in technology and concepts in the delivery of healthcare.
AAHAM is highly respected throughout the United States offering multiple certification programs for those individuals who have chosen healthcare as their career. The certification programs include:
CPAT/CCAT COVERED IN THIS STUDY GUIDE: This certification process was introduced in 1992 as a direct result of the dramatic changes in the healthcare industry. The Certified Patient Accounts Technician/Certified Clinic Accounts Technician examination tests clerical staff proficiency and provides a resource for patient account managers to ensure staffing competence. The examination has three parts, consisting of multiple-choice questions. The exams test overall understanding of healthcare patient accounting in the areas of Admitting, Billing, and Collections inclusive of testing the knowledge of industry standard healthcare abbreviations. Successful completion will establish those individuals as being proficient and professionally competent. Further, the designation, sponsored by AAHAM, will provide recognition from your peers and healthcare executives nationally.
MEDICAL FINANCIAL BILLING
A/R and A/P Medical Billing is a process that NO COMPANY can do without. Due to this, there IS ALWAYS a HIGH DEMAND for A/R & A/P Specialist in the business world.
An A/R & A/P Specialist’s tasks are the following:
• Recording the Company’s Financial Transactions
• Creating Financial Statements
• Using Computer Programs such as Med-Soft, Medical Manager, QuickBooks, Quicken, Peachtree, and Excel
• Bill Insurance Companies
• Reconciles and maintain patient files
• Sets up and Maintains Accounts Receivable/Payable files and other Financial records
• Makes Bank Deposits and Prepares Income Statements
• Data enter using Medical Abbreviations and Terminology
• And much more!
Length of Training: 4 months including 3 months of classroom instruction and 1 month of internship. Monday - Thursday 8am - 4pm.
Skills Learned: Bookkeeping Terminology, Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable, Medical Terminology/Medical Abbreviations, Preparing Financial Statements, Medical Insurance, Special Journals/Payroll, Appointment Scheduling, Bank Reconciliation, QuickBooks or Medical Manager/Medic—Soft, Medical Coding CPT/ICD 9—CM, and Data Entry/Keyboarding/Word/Excel.
MEDICAL BILLING CUSTOMER SERVICE
Medical Billing involves routine administrative tasks in health care offices which keep the healthcare delivery running smoothly. Roles & responsibilities may vary from office to office but usually fall in the “generalist” category. Tasks include:
• Answering patient calls & delivering messages.
• Interacting with people constantly, whether on the telephone or in person.
• Multi-Tasking: greeting patients, answering telephones, updating patient charts, completing insurance forms, billing & ICD-9 coding for payments, scheduling appointments...ALL AT ONCE!
Length of Training: 16 weeks of training
CLASSES ARE HELD: Monday - Thursday, 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM.
Skills Learned: Medical Billing concepts, Medical terminology, ICD-9, CM Coding, CPT Coding, and CMS Payroll, Petty cash, Accounts Payable and Receivable, Word, Excel, and Administrative Procedures
Preferred Requirements:
• Students have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. TABE Scores: Reading level 9.0 and Math level 8.0.
• Minimum Requirements: Students with no High School Diploma or G.E.D. must schedule to take their G.E.D. test and or have taken some portions of their G.E.D. test. TABE Scores: Reading level 8.0 and Math level 8.0.
• Must have a Clean Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse Clearance.
